In fact, he began the play using his laptop in the dialysis room in September, , but had actually booked the Passe Muraille space in August. While his grand design was increasing awareness about kidney disease, he specifically wanted the general public to know about the mind-numbing boredom experienced by renal failure patients forced to exist on dialysis.

The flashpoint for the play was a conversation he overheard in the dialysis room. I was shocked and curious. This meant the guy wanted to die.

I also thought he was very brave because I was a compliant patient, the Pollyanna doing everything I was told to do while I waited for a transplant.

He was at the other end of the spectrum. Thus, two characters in conflict were born, and Rawley envisioned his play for two males with the prosaic names of Frank and Bill.

Then his friend, actress Wendy Krekeler, 38, gave him one of her kidneys. Rawley had already experienced the crushing disappointment that not one of 16 potential donors from either his family or friends was a match, but miraculously, Krekeler was.
